FARM FOR SALE

For Sue and Dave Farlow,
May 2006

Morning over west pasture: moonset
huge and pumpkin
pale, lumbering toward the edge of the known world.

Two p.m., fishing in the pond:
the glare of sun on water frightening the crickets
into silence, students in class, always
the wrong answer: which way to the bream’s wide mouth?

Fat evening: sitting in the yard,
the skin of this sky barely milky blue under a cape of rose,
robins hurtling overhead by thousands toward spring,
you can feel the wind from their wings
in the way your hair moves.

Who will buy that pale gourd, those uncaught fish,
that silky breath of the turning world?
